What to expect
Immediately after LASIK surgery
Your vision changes quickly in the first two days. Here’s what’s normal.
Some blur or haze is normal
After LASIK, it is normal for your vision to be a bit blurry or hazy. This is part of the healing process, not a sign that something is wrong.
Most patients see improvement within 24 to 48 hours
Vision typically sharpens noticeably within the first day or two as the eye settles, and many patients return to normal activities soon after.
Close-up clarity can vary
Clarity for near tasks like reading depends on your individual healing process. Some patients read comfortably on day two; others need a little longer.
The timeline
Easing back into reading
Listen to your body and give your eyes ample rest. As a general guide:
First 24 hours
Rest your eyes
Your vision may be blurry or hazy on the day of surgery. Skip reading and screens, keep your eyes closed as much as you can, and let them heal.
After 24 hours
Gradually resume reading
You may begin reading again in short sessions. Stop and rest if you notice discomfort, dryness, or blur.
As healing continues
Back to normal reading
Reading is generally comfortable for most patients after the initial recovery period. Increase session length as your comfort level improves, and follow your surgeon’s advice.
Tips for reading after LASIK
Start with short periods
Begin with short reading sessions to avoid eye fatigue, and gradually increase the duration as your comfort level improves.
Use adequate lighting
Read in well-lit environments to reduce strain on your eyes.
Take breaks
Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
Monitor for discomfort
If you notice discomfort, dryness, or blurry vision while reading, take a break and give your eyes a rest.
Each patient’s recovery is unique, so attend all follow-up appointments and share any concerns with your eye care provider. See the full aftercare guide for the complete recovery plan.

Tips for a better reading experience post-LASIK
Keep your eyes moist
Use lubricating eye drops to combat dryness, which can make reading more comfortable.
Consider your position
Good posture while reading helps you avoid neck and eye strain.
Use a humidifier
Keeping the air moist in your reading environment helps keep your eyes comfortable.
Limit screen time
If reading on digital devices, reduce screen glare and use blue light filters to minimize eye strain.
Common questions about LASIK recovery
Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and whirlpools for one week. After at least one week you can get back in the water, following your post-op precautions.
Most patients see noticeably better within 24 hours and return to normal activities within a week. Vision continues to sharpen and stabilize over the first 3–6 months as healing completes.
Light indoor exercise can resume the day after surgery. Add moderate outdoor activity after a few days with protective eyewear, and more demanding activities after one week.
Not in the first 24 hours; arrange a driver for your procedure. Most patients can safely drive the day after surgery once their doctor confirms at the follow-up appointment.
Wait at least one month before rubbing your eyes, and ideally break the habit for good. Rubbing too soon can displace the healing corneal flap.
Non-contact activity can resume after a week. Contact sports can resume about three weeks after surgery with protective eyewear.
Any sunglasses with full UV protection. Your eyes will be light-sensitive at first, so wear them whenever you’re outdoors during the first weeks.
Foundation and lipstick are fine right away. Wait at least three days before any eye makeup, and check with your eye care professional if you are unsure.
